Interactions between Surface Waves, Tides, and Storm-Induced Currents over Shelf Waters of the Northwest Atlantic

چکیده

A coupled wave–tide–circulation model is used to investigate wave–current interactions (WCIs) over the shelf waters of Northwest Atlantic (NWA) during Hurricane Earl (2010). WCIs have substantial impacts on hydrodynamics in upper ocean. The significant wave heights are modulated by WCIs, particularly regions with strong current gradients, a reduction up ~2.1 m (20%) storm. Noticeable decreases surface elevations and tidal currents occur tides such as Gulf Maine, mainly due wave-enhanced bottom stress. Over weak currents, effects dominated two competitive processes between wave-induced forces mixing. former strengthens (up ~0.55 m/s) increases peak storm surge ~0.48 m). latter responsible for storm-induced ~0.94 anticyclonic modulation directions. Vertically, extend vertical shear shift it downward storm, which enhances local mixing changes structures near-inertial oscillations (NIOs). Moreover, also change magnitudes NIOs subtidal affect intensity WCIs.

Shore - parallel Sediment Transport by Waves and Tides in Inner Shelf Waters

In shallow waters the combined action of waves and currents significantly affects the motion of sediment on the bottom, and hence the nature and phase of their interactions with each other contribute to the shaping of the beach. Using pressure and velocity data collected just outside the surfzone (in two meters depth) on the south shore of Martha's Vineyard, MA, we compared the variations in ne...

Effects of Winds, Tides, and Storm Surges on Ocean Surface Waves in the Japan/east Sea

Wind driven oceanic surface waves have a major impact on marine activity, especially near the coastal regions. Strong winds associated with winter storms induce storm surges along the west coast of Japan. Combined high wind conditions, tides, and storm surges can have a tremendous impact on the surface wave fields. Accurate wave forecast becomes an important issue at various operational forecas...

Downscaling Effects on Modelling Waves, Tides and Storm Surge

This paper presents the results of downscaling effects when modelling waves, tides and storm surge using a nested modelling system. In this study, the coupled POLCOMS/ProWAM models are used, with 3 nested computational domains, the largest of which covers part of north-eastern Atlantic Ocean with a coarse resolution grid and the smallest covers the surrounding waters of south-west Cornish coast...

Numerical modeling of tides, currents and waves off Maharashtra coast

A two-dimensional finite element numerical model has been developed to simulate tide and wave characteristics for Maharashtra coastal region, India. The region was divided into four zones based on water depth and the Chezy’s friction coefficient values for each zone were determined. It was noticed that as the water depth decreases the values of friction coefficient increases. Results are valida...
